What Are Would You Rather Questions?
So, what exactly are Would You Rather Questions? At their core, they’re simple questions that offer two choices, and your preschoolers have to decide which one they’d rather do. It’s a fun way for them to practice making decisions, and even better, it encourages them to express their opinions and get a little creative! Whether it’s picking between two animals, foods, or adventures, “Would you rather” questions give little learners a chance to think on their feet and share their thoughts with their classmates.
How to Use Would You Rather Questions in the Classroom
There are so many ways to incorporate Would You Rather Questions into your classroom, and I’ve found some tried-and-true methods that work wonders for getting your students engaged. Here are a few of my absolute favorites:
Some of my favorite ways are:
Morning Circle: Start the day off right by displaying a new “Would You Rather” question each morning. Let your students discuss their answers with their friends—perfect for getting those little minds warmed up for the day ahead!
Class Sign-in: Try this fun twist on the typical sign-in routine: display a Would You Rather question on a pocket chart, and have your students move their names to one side or the other depending on their answer. It’s an interactive way to kick off the day and get everyone involved.
Connection to Family Activity: Send a question home with students every Friday so families can continue the conversation over the weekend. Bonus points for including a “cheat sheet” with follow-up questions to keep the fun (and learning!) going all weekend long.
Would You Rather Book: How fun would it be to create a classroom book full of your students’ favorite Would You Rather questions? At the end of the year, you can even send this home as a keepsake—what a sweet memory!
Opinion-based Discussions: When you’re diving into argumentative writing, Would You Rather Questions are a fantastic way to help students practice forming and defending their opinions. Plus, it opens up a conversation about how opinions can differ from one person to the next.
Writing Prompt: For your older preschoolers or early writers, turn these questions into writing prompts. They can write about their choice and explain why they made it—perfect for getting those creative juices flowing!
Transition Time: Need a quick and engaging way to transition between activities? Use a Would You Rather Question! For example, “Stand up if you prefer dogs, sit down if you prefer cats.” It’s an easy, fun way to keep kids moving and engaged.
Incorporating Would You Rather Questions into your classroom is a simple way to add a little fun and a lot of learning to your day. Plus, your students will love the chance to get creative with their answers!
