Part 2: Empathy Sorting Activity

This teaching empathy resource includes 32 scenarios to discuss and sort. The scenarios are specific for our young learners and involve situations they may encounter in preschool and kindergarten.

Included are possible discussion questions to extend the children’s thinking:
· What is this person feeling?
· Is what is being done show empathy?
· Is what is being said show empathy?
· How could we show more empathy in this situation?
You may wish to extend the discussion by adding the 3rd card.
Challenge the children by asking them, “How could we show more empathy in these situations?” What could we say or do to show more empathy?
Included are also 2 recording sheets for children to record their thoughts.

Part 3: Empathy Task Cards

These 44 task cards have been designed to get children identifying feelings of others and think about ways to respond with empathy.
There are 22 Task Cards for ‘At School’ & 22 Task Cards for ‘At Home’.
Each Scenario Task Card asks the question:
  1. How does the person feel in this situation?
  2. How can we respond with empathy?

How to Use these Empathy Scenario Task Cards?

OPTION 1: You may choose to use these cards as a catalyst for discussion on their own with a small group, an individual or during your morning group time.
OPTION 2: You may use the Feeling Character Cards as a way for children to respond to the scenario. You read the scenario and the child holds up the feeling character card they think applies.

OPTION 3:
Children who can read pick a card and fill in the recording sheet independently.
